Conversation Heart Math

I love using candy for math. Its motivating and fun and I like to make the boys work for their candy! We did 2 math activities with conversation hearts.
First we sorted the conversation hearts by color on to a piece of paper that I folded into sixths.

After sorting them by color I helped the boys count how many of each color and write the number in each square on the paper. I modeled how to write the numbers on a white board for them.

I saw the idea to use conversation hearts for estimation here.
I drew a heart on some construction paper and had the boys make a guess of how many conversation hearts it would take to cover the heart. The only problem was I made the hearts a little too big it took 37 and 47 hearts to cover it.

After the hearts were full of the candy we counted how many it took and wrote the number on the line. This was also good fine motor practice placing all the candies.
Since there were so many candies to count I had them move the candy one at a time back to the bowl to count.
We were going to do patterning too but I saved that for another day.  After counting the hearts I put a few in a little cup for the boys to eat and put the rest away for more activities.
